And Baby (Bird) Makes Three

My parakeets - who, for the record, we thought were both males, have been sitting on eggs for just over a couple of weeks. Last night, one of the eggs hatched. We're not peeking, because we don't want to freak the birds out, so of course no pictures yet either, but we know that at least one egg has hatched, because we can hear the cutest little new tiny birdie peeps from the nest box. :-)
Maybe the second egg will hatch tonight or tomorrow (there are only the two). Hooray!

Don't carve a turkey in front of the baby birds! You will traumatize them for life. Happy Turkey Day.

CP -
I don't even do that in front of the grown up birds! No chickens, either.
LOL

So, what made you twig that there was a female in there? The laying of the said eggs?

I know nothing about birds - chirping ones or gobbling ones - but a new bird in the mix did make me smile.

Janet - may be a while for pics - the mama bird still covers the babies. =)

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

Jeanie - with parakeets, there's a band (cere) across their beaks that shows blue in the males, and in the females, usually turns a chocolate brown when they're sexually mature. Zulie (our female) has a white band that never changed color. She's a blue & white bird, and we always imagined we could see a tint of blue there. So yes, we had no idea we had a female until the first egg appeared. LOL

I hope you had a wonderful day today, too! :-)

OK...call me sadistic....but when you said "so, of course,no pictures yet" I had this hysterical (Pixar-style) visual of baby birds leaning out of their nests for the 1st time to take a peek of the world around them and FLASH! They are met with a camera...the bulging eyes, gaping beaks...has me ROFL!!

Sorry!

LOL, Janet-
birds are way quicker than we are!
It's about 3 weeks from the time the egg is laid to the time it hatches (we have at least one hatched, & possibly 2 - I don't want to upset the parents by trying to see), and then it's about 2 months before the babies are weaned. They're in a nesting box - we may not be seeing them (or getting photos) for a while yet!

Yep - most likely...
I did try to peek in the nest box, and the mama covered the birds with her wings and gave me such a look!
